First, the mountains. You'll do the Ha Giang Loop the comfortable way, in a private car with a driver, so your hands are free for the camera and your eyes stay on the view. Up through the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, over the Tham Ma Pass, past the H'Mong King's Palace, and into Dong Van, where you fall asleep in a cliffside bungalow on the edge of the karst plateau. Then comes the morning everyone talks about: Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam's four great passes, and a slow boat down the emerald Nho Que river through the Tu San canyon. Then, the water. You come down from the mountains, catch your breath in Hanoi, and board a small cruise into Lan Ha Bay, Halong's quieter, greener side. Your cabin has its own balcony over the water. Kayak between limestone islands, watch the sunset from the deck, and wake up on the bay. Who's coming?
