Bucketlist Roadtrip in Vietnam: The Ha Giang Loop & Halong Bay Cruise

Feb 21 – Feb 27, 20277 Days13 travelers
Popular

Thirteen of you. Seven days. One trip that changes gear halfway through, from the roughest, most beautiful road in the north to the calmest water in the country. The first act is the Ha Giang Loop, the private-car version, so you watch the road instead of gripping a handlebar. You drive north from Hanoi to Ha Giang City, then up through the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, the Tham Ma Pass and the H'Mong King's Palace to Dong Van, where you sleep in cliffside bungalows on the edge of the karst plateau. The next morning is the one everyone comes for: Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the four great passes of Vietnam, and a slow boat down the emerald Nho Que river through the Tu San canyon. In December the air is dry, cold and the clearest it gets all year. The second act is Halong. You come off the mountains, back through Hanoi, and board a small cruise into Lan Ha Bay, the quieter, greener side of the bay, away from the crowds. Your cabin has a private balcony over the water. You kayak between limestone islands, watch the sun go down from the deck, and wake up on the bay. For founders, creators and the friends who've done Southeast Asia's well-worn trail and want the version with a story in it. The group is capped at thirteen and closed, the same faces from the Old Quarter street-food walk to the last morning on the water. The food is catered Indian or no-pork-no-beef the whole way, a rare comfort this deep in the mountains. Your only job is to be there.

About the trip

First, the mountains. You'll do the Ha Giang Loop the comfortable way, in a private car with a driver, so your hands are free for the camera and your eyes stay on the view. Up through the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, over the Tham Ma Pass, past the H'Mong King's Palace, and into Dong Van, where you fall asleep in a cliffside bungalow on the edge of the karst plateau. Then comes the morning everyone talks about: Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam's four great passes, and a slow boat down the emerald Nho Que river through the Tu San canyon. Then, the water. You come down from the mountains, catch your breath in Hanoi, and board a small cruise into Lan Ha Bay, Halong's quieter, greener side. Your cabin has its own balcony over the water. Kayak between limestone islands, watch the sunset from the deck, and wake up on the bay. Who's coming? Founders, creators and friends who've done the usual Southeast Asia trail and want the version with a story in it. Just thirteen of you, the same faces from the first street-food walk in the Old Quarter to the last morning on the water. All you need to do is show up.

Your Gameplan

Day 1

The night before the road

The tribe forms in Hanoi before a single wheel turns.

  • Land in Hanoi and settle into La Siesta Premium, a boutique hotel two minutes from Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart of the Old Quarter.
  • Meet the twelve strangers you'll spend the week with over a street-food walk through the lantern-lit lanes, tasting your way from bun cha to egg coffee.
  • No early start is tomorrow's problem, tonight is just the group finding its feet before the mountains.
Day 1
Day 2

The long drive into the north

The city falls away and the mountains begin.

  • Leave Hanoi after breakfast for the six-to-seven-hour drive north to Ha Giang City in a private air-conditioned car, comfort breaks along the way.
  • Watch the flat rice country slowly buckle into limestone hills as you reach the mouth of the loop by late afternoon.
  • Check into the Yen Bien Luxury Hotel for a warm dinner and a real bed before the road turns wild tomorrow.
Day 2
Day 3

Onto the karst plateau

The loop opens and the north unfolds in front of you.

  • Climb to the Quan Ba Heaven Gate for your first look at the karst, the Twin Mountains and Tam Son town laid out far below.
  • Wind up the Tham Ma Pass and stop at the H'Mong King's Palace, once home to the powerful Vuong dynasty who ruled these hills.
  • Reach Dong Van by evening and check into cliffside bungalows on the edge of the plateau, the ancient town's stone streets a short walk away.
Day 3
Day 4

The Road of Happiness and the river below

The pass everyone comes for, and the boat nobody expects.

  • Ride Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the four great passes of Vietnam, carved into the cliff high above the Tu San canyon.
  • Drop to the water for a slow boat down the emerald Nho Que river, the limestone walls rising a thousand feet on either side.
  • Begin the long, scenic drive back toward Hanoi, the karst flattening out of the window one last time, and sleep in the Old Quarter.
Day 4
Day 5

A day to breathe in Hanoi

A soft landing between the two halves of the trip.

  • Slow morning in the Old Quarter, Train Street coffee, the Temple of Literature, or just an unhurried walk around Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • The day is yours to wander, shop the lanes, or do nothing at all after the miles behind you.
  • Come together for a signature group dinner in the evening, mountains done and the bay ahead.
Day 5
Day 6

Onto the water

The mountains let go and the bay takes over.

  • Transfer to the coast and board a small cruise into Lan Ha Bay, the quieter, greener neighbour of Halong, away from the day-boat crowds.
  • Drop into a cabin with a private balcony over the water, then kayak out between limestone islands as the afternoon light softens.
  • Watch the sun go down from the deck over a signature dinner, the bay glassy and yours, the loudest thing the clink of glasses.
Day 6
Day 7

One last morning on the bay

The quiet end that the loop earned.

  • Wake up on the water, catch the mist lifting off the islands, and take it slow over a late breakfast on deck.
  • Cruise back to shore late morning as the trip winds down, then transfer to Hanoi in time for evening flights home.
  • Say the goodbyes that are harder than you expected them to be, seven days after you were all strangers.
