This is a Nagaland trip that climaxes at Hornbill, not a festival package with a state attached. You base four nights near Kohima at Akim in Jotsoma, a warm compound of cottages and rooms with home-cooked meals and hosts close by. From there the week builds: first contact with the festival at Kisama, a day in Khonoma, Asia's first green village, and the forest walks of Dzuleke where the river runs underground, then the peak, the Closing Ceremony, every Naga tribe present at full volume. When the festival crowds head home, you go deeper. Two nights in Tuophema, a cultural village built around twelve cottages for its twelve clans, with an optional dawn hike up Niathu Peak and a farewell dinner to close it properly. About the trip
Every December, all seventeen Naga tribes gather on one festival ground at Kisama. Most travellers watch it from the crowd. You will live the week around it. Seven days through the Angami hills: a full immersion day at Hornbill, heritage walks through Khonoma and Dzuleke with local guides, the whole Closing Ceremony with every tribe in full regalia, and then two slow days in Tuophema, a living village of twelve clan cottages most travellers never reach. Home-cooked dinners, local rice brews, cold mountain nights, and a small tribe of fourteen who picked culture over comfort.

Your Gameplan
The Long Road In
- You land in Dimapur by late morning, meet the crew, and grab a first Naga bite before the climb begins.
- Then it is up into the hills, about three hours of winding road to Jotsoma near Kohima, reaching your stay before the early mountain dark.
- Tonight is not a tick-list: a home-cooked welcome dinner at Akim, a circle to learn everyone's names, and the slow start of a group becoming a tribe.
First Contact
- Breakfast, then the short drive to Kisama for a full day at Hornbill, the whole festival open in front of you.
- Wander the main arena, the tribal morungs, the Bamboo Hall and the WWII museum, break for lunch at the festival kitchens, and let each tribe pull you in.
- Every car comes back with something, a tribe, a dish, a craft, and you trade stories over the group dinner back at Akim.
Where the Forest Is Law
- A morning walk through Khonoma, Asia's first green village, with a local guide, terraced fields and the story of a village that has protected its own forest for generations.
- After lunch at the village inn you drive out to Dzuleke, a tiny Angami village where the river runs underground, for a slow forest walk, a chance of spotting Mithun, and local brews.
- Back before dark, the evening is free to sit with the hosts or just watch the hills go quiet.
All Seventeen Tribes
- The morning is Kohima proper: the Cathedral and viewpoint, a walk through Bara Basti, one of Asia's largest villages, and the local markets for shawls and handicrafts.
- Then the big one. You head out early to beat the crowds and settle into group seating for the Closing Ceremony at Kisama, every Naga tribe present, full regalia, full energy, the whole trip arriving right here.
- Back in Kohima you celebrate it properly, a dinner with live music, the festival now firmly under your skin.
The Village With No Audience
- A relaxed breakfast, check out, and a short drive to Tuophema, a cultural village built around twelve cottages for its twelve clans.
- The afternoon is slow on purpose: the paddy terraces, the traditional architecture, the crafts, an elder or host walking you through what each clan holds.
- Dinner together in the village. You saw Nagaland perform at the festival; now you see it at home.
Summit and Send-off
- An early start for anyone doing the Niathu Peak hike, about two hours uphill through preserved forest to the summit views, with a pack lunch at the top; everyone else takes an easy village and craft walk with the second guide.
- The afternoon belongs to you: rest, wander the terraces, or sit with the hosts and let the week settle.
- Tonight we close it properly, a farewell dinner and a quiet ritual to hold onto the week you just lived.
The Road Home
- A slow breakfast, then the drive back down to Dimapur one last time through the hills.
- Airport drop on the other side, with departures from 1:30pm so the mountain road never feels like a sprint.
- You fly home with mud washed off, a shawl in your bag, and a week of Nagaland you did not read about, you lived.
